Michal Ožibko

(cze)

He created his first oil painting at the age of 14. At secondary technical school he got into graffiti, which later influenced the formats of his current work within the medium of classical hanging pictures. This same experience from the street radicalized Ozibko’s view on what can become realistic (not just graphic) and the content and theme of his motifs. He tends towards a photo-realistic or even hyper-realistic vision in spite of the fact that he deals with non-figurative aspects. The final technically faultless design stops being ‘merely’ an instrument of artistic expression, but is a self-reflective commentary on the formal and technical-technological characteristic of the whole artwork. Ozibko’s signature is in his realistic aspect soft and concentrates on the technique of glazing which he explores and specializes in. By softly laying several diaphanous layers of oil painting he gradually reaches for the supple surface of the picture. The technique of glazing, fundamental in classical painting, reached its zenith in Ozibko’s duet ‘i-Death’ (British Portrait Award, British Portrait Gallery – 2010).

Thematically Ozibko in his work is interested in showing traditional compositions of regular subjects or historically embedded themes and iconography, which newly redefine and encroach on reality, which often has an existential character, as well as cultural and social-spiritual overlaps.
