Tomáš Jetela

(CZE)

Tomáš Jetela (1986) is exceptional for being a consistent figural painter on the Czech art scene of his generation. The word “expression” belongs among the terms which play a crucial role in the case of this painter. On one hand, it is connected with Jetel’s constant effort to capture the inner side of the characters through concentration or by contrast through the emptiness of a face, where, together with the emphasis on gestures of hands, his painter’s attention is primarily focused. On the other hand, it includes a distinctive expression that forms the foundation of his visual message. The thing is that, over time, Tomáš Jetela has developed a specific formal expression based on a free combination of paintings, drawings and collages.

Painting connected with drawing linearity and cuttings from books or magazines is also the starting point of his contemporary visual handwriting. It has largely become not only a reliable Jetel’s identification sign, but – no matter how his style of working is based on intuitiveness – it also allows him to use different quality of individual media creatively to reinforce the emotive aspect of paintings, indicate an unexpected context or stressed the centre of his compositions. It is the discreet, but subsequently more effective combination of body game with the stratified way of its formal mediation that is the essence of the special attraction of distinctive and expressive painting of Tomáš Jetela.

The theme of his works are people, or, more precisely, man, as these are often solitaries. Even though these are characters which are not connected with the author by any direct link, it is apparent from the way of display that his relation to them is quite certainly not neutral. In this respect, it is possible to talk about his paintings as personal and knowing that world-renowned artists often serve him as models, the term personality is not unreasonable. This is also supported by Jetela’s habit to quote in hints some of the stylish mannerisms of favourite painters, such as Bacon, Goya, Schiele, in his work.
